A Surface Reconstruction Method for Highly Noisy Point Clouds

چکیده
In this paper we propose a surface reconstruction method for highly noisy and non-uniform data based on minimal surface model and tensor voting method. To deal with ill-posedness, noise and/or other uncertainties in the data we processes the raw data first using tensor voting before we do surface reconstruction. The tensor voting procedure allows more global and robust communications among the data to extract coherent geometric features and saliency independent of the surface reconstruction. These extracted information will be used to preprocess the data and to guide the final surface reconstruction. Numerically the level set method is used for surface reconstruction. Our method can handle complicated topology as well as highly noisy and/or non-uniform data set. Moreover, improvements of efficiency in implementing the tensor voting method are also proposed. We demonstrate the ability of our method using synthetic and real data.

Smooth Surface Reconstruction from Noisy Clouds
We describe a new method for surface reconstruction and smoothing based on unorganized noisy point clouds without normals. The output of the method is a refined triangular mesh that approximates the original point cloud while preserving the fine details present in the underlying surface. The method has five steps: noise removal, clustering, data reduction, initial reconstruction, and mesh refin...
متن کاملMultigrid Narrow Band Surface Reconstruction via Level Set Functions
In this paper we propose a novel fast method for implicit surface reconstruction from unorganized point clouds. Our algorithm employs a multigrid solver on a narrow band of the level set function that represents the reconstructed surface, which greatly improves computational efficiency of surface reconstruction. The new model can accurately reconstruct surfaces from noisy unorganized point clou...
متن کاملAdaptive extraction and representation of geometric structures from unorganized 3D point sets
The primary emphasis of this thesis concerns the extraction and representation of intrinsic properties of three-dimensional (3D) unorganized point clouds. The points establishing a point cloud as it mainly emerges from LiDaR (Light Detection and Ranging) scan devices or by reconstruction from two-dimensional (2D) image series represent discrete samples of real world objects. Depending on the ty...
متن کاملSurface Reconstruction from Noisy Point Clouds using Coulomb Potentials
We show that surface reconstruction from point clouds without orientation information can be formulated as a convection problem in a force field based on Coulomb potentials. To efficiently evaluate Coulomb potentials on the volumetric grid on which the evolving surface (current approximation to the final surface) is convected we use the so called ’Particle-Particle Particle-Mesh’ (PPPM) algorit...
متن کاملRobust Smoothing of Noisy Point Clouds
This paper addresses the problem of removing the noise from noisy points clouds in the context of surface reconstruction. We introduce a new smoothing operator Q inspired by the moving least-squares method and robust statistics theory. Our method can be seen as an improvement of the moving least-squares method to preserve sharp features. We also present effective numerical optimization algorith...
